Exfoliation is a step a lot of men overlook in their grooming routines despite the very noticeable results! In this step-by-step guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know to properly exfoliate underneath your beard, answer some common questions and dispel some myths.
First off, what exactly is exfoliation?
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin. This is done by using a chemical exfoliant (acid), physical exfoliant (granular substance), or an exfoliating tool (beard brush).
What is the difference between chemical and physical exfoliation?
Chemical exfoliation - Uses acids applied to the skin that dissolve dead skin cells. Weaker formulations are sold over the counter while stronger formulas are used by dermatologists and other skincare professionals in a clinical setting.
Physical exfoliation - Utilizes granular substances like ground up seeds, shells, rock and crystalline substances such as sugar. When massaged on the skin and beard, these substances physically loosen and remove dead skin cells.
Is an exfoliating tool as effective as a physical exfoliant?
While brushing/combing your beard does provide some exfoliation, we’ve found that it is superficial and not as effective as using an actual exfoliant like a face and beard scrub.
Why should I exfoliate my skin?
Exfoliation brightens the complexion by removing dead and dull skin cells. Is your skin looking tired and dull? Exfoliate. Experiencing flaking skin and/or beard dandruff? Exfoliation can help. Face and beard just not feeling clean even after washing? Time to exfoliate. Exfoliation helps to deeply clean your skin and pores.
How to exfoliate your beard
- Thoroughly wet both face and beard with lukewarm water. While you can do this in the sink, it is easiest to exfoliate in the shower.
- Apply desired amount of product to your fingertips and divide equally between hands.
- Using a circular motion, gently massage into both face and beard. Continue doing this until you are satisfied with the coverage. Don’t exfoliate for more than a minute or two as that can lead to over-exfoliation.
- Rinse thoroughly
- After towel drying, apply a daily facial moisturizer to both face and beard.
How often should I exfoliate my face and beard?
Most of us only need to exfoliate once or twice a week. Any more than that risks damaging your skin and causing more harm than good. Start with once a week and go from there.
Do I need to wash my face and beard after exfoliating?
With some types of exfoliants, yes, you need to wash your face after, which can lead to overdrying of the face and beard. However, with a properly formulated product washing after exfoliating isn’t necessary. We formulated our charcoal sugar scrub to take care of all the dirty work for you. No need to use a separate wash after.
Is exfoliating safe?
Yes, when properly done, exfoliating is safe. Using the wrong type of exfoliant or exfoliating too aggressively can damage both the skin and beard.
